BLOG: 7 JULY 2021
This is the first of many blogs to come. I wish to take readers on a unique journey on which I have embarked.
Over the past couple of months, I have been working in a collaborative exercise with Michael Claxton. Mike had developed an idea for a book that he wanted to write. He approached me and asked whether I would co-author “Connor’s Diamonds.” Of course, as a writer, I realise this may change as time goes on.
So how did two writers who write so differently commit to working together for many months to come? Mike being a crime writer and I write non-fiction/memoir.
At first it took me a little while to get my head around the story. A few meetings over coffee, discussions about how this would work, and outlining the details. It was not long before drafts were being shared. More coffee, more brainstorming.
I knew that I would have to get to know Mike not only as a writer but as a person! Fortunately, the FAWQ Festival provided ample time to get to know Mike and his wife, Angela. This was an important time to bond; informal discussions pathed the way to strike the right balance. It is a learning curve for us.
So far, so good. Creating a single voice has come about by listening to each other’s ideas; trusting what we write is in the best interest of the story–after all, this must be the creation of two minds. Just a small give away, and two continents.
How will we meld two minds into one story? I hope to share this with readers over time.
